41st Junior PGA Championship - Girls Preview

Like on the boys side, the 41st Junior PGA Championship will feature a strong field, and will include last years 2nd place finisher, who also lost in a playoff.  However, where the guys return a respectful 6 of the top 10 at last years event, the girls return 9 of the top 10.  In Bryan, TX at the Miramont Country Club in 2015, Elizabeth Wang beat Mariel Galdiano to capture the 40th Junior PGA Championship.

Joining these two from last years top 10 are: Yujeong Son, Karah Sanford, Jennifer Chang, Alyaa Abdulghany, Hailee Cooper, Ariana Saenz and Lucy Li.  That's a strong field.  And, four of those players are coming off an impressive week at the US Women's Amateur.  Galdiano was medalist.  Li finished second in the medal portion and reached the round of 32 in match play. Cooper got to the round of 16. Abdulghany made it to the round of 32.  And another player, Kaitlyn Papp also reached the round of 64.

Want more proof how strong this field is, then consider that 29 of the top 101 players listed in the current Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings, are in the field.  31 players have signed or committed to play college golf.  With that said, expect to see a lot of college golf coaches in attendance to evaluate the nearly two dozen highly ranked, un-committed players in the field, and perhaps find a gem among the other players, as well.

Also, like the boys event, this will go a long ways to determine the Junior Ryder Cup team for Team USA.  It should be a great week of golf at Wannamoisett CC.
