What do two college players have in common with a middle-shool player from New York? All three will have an opportunity to be the next U.S. Junior Amateur champion in a few weeks (July 17 - 22) at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kansas. North Carolina State freshman Christian Salzer and Georgia Tech freshman Tyler Strafaci qualified last month, as did 2022 prospect Zachary Shallat of Dix Hills, N.Y. Those are 3 of 127 players that qualified in 57 qualifiers across the United States in June. They join 27 additional players that are exempt into the field, including last year's champion and runner-up. Min Woo Lee defeated Noah Goodwin 2 & 1 last summer at the Honors Course in Tennessee. The remaining players in the 156-player field will come from 114 alternates from those 57 qualifiers.
The University of Florida leads the fields as far as signee's and/or commitments are concerned. There are 5 future Gators in the field, including 2018 verbal Eugene Hong, who has made the quarterfinals and semifinals in each of the past two years. UCLA is next with 4 future Bruins. Then you have Alabama, Arizona State, Auburn and SMU, with 3 each.

** - Average Points are based on the AJGA dividing total points by the number of tournaments played. If a player has less than 6 AJGA qualifying tournaments, then 6 will be used as the divisor.
Three players appear to be locks for earning a spot on the team, so far. Noah Goodwin is playing a lot of amateur events, but still has enough points for the top spot. William Mouw's win at the Western Junior last week has his average points up to 55.15 through 4 counting tournaments. And, with a win at the Haas Family Invitational, Trent Phillips in only 3 counting tournaments, has an average of 54.85. The current top 12 (which makes the team) has an average point total of 25.44. The US Junior Amateur and PGA Junior appear to be the last 200 point tournaments before the first 11 players are chosen the first week of August.
The inaugural Junior Presidents Cup, to be played at Plainfield Country Club on Sept. 25-26 in Edison, New Jersey, is a hot topic among the top players entering the heat of the summer competition. This week, 200 points are up for grabs at the AJGA Haas Family Invitational at Sedgefield CC in Greensboro, NC. The PGA TOUR has partnered with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) to start the new international competition between junior golfers from around the world. Teams will be led by Honorary Captains Jack Nicklaus (Team USA) and Gary Player (International Team). The U.S. Team will be captained by David Toms, while the International Team will be led by Trevor Immelman. The US team will be made up from the top ranked players in the AJGA rankings.
